Inspiring the Muse

Between 1897 and 1909, the University of Missouri's Missouri Student Union published the MSU Independent. This student-oriented publication featured articles and editorials on topics relating to student life and activities (athletics, the YMCA and YWCA, and debate) as well academics, administration, faculty, alumni, speakers and the town of Columbia. The Independent was published by male students — except for the the annual Valentine — girls' — edition.

While researching in University Archives for our Centennial, we found the February 1901 issue of the Independent. The lovely Gibson Girl image on the cover inspired Deborah Huelsbergen, associate professor of art, in the design of the Muse of Arts and Science.
